Present Day English 1
Synopsis
This course is designed for teachers who are looking for a class-book which will ease their task of lesson-planning and at the same time enable their students to make rapid progress in understanding, speaking, reading and writing everyday English.
Each Unit in Book One begins with a reading passage with the daily life of an ordinary English family taken from “Present Day English”. A piece of conversation follows so that similar material is treated colloquially and more formally in the same Unit. Next come sentence-pattern drills illustrating structures and usage, arranged to a carefully graded scheme. A reading-text follows the drills. The Unit ends with a list of new words and idioms and a plentiful supply of exercises based on the material of that and earlier Units.
Since most of the work in the initial stages of language learning must be oral, teachers will probably wish to spend a number of class periods on the pre-text tables, supplementing it from the classroom situation, before moving on to Unit 1.
Teaching English as a second language is a highly skilled art, particularly when rapid results are looked for.
It is hoped this material will make the task easier for the teacher and more enjoyable for the students.
