Raphiel Eristavi The Person and The Age
Synopsis
In April 2024, the 200th anniversary of the birth of Georgian writer, scholar, and public figure Raphiel Eristavi, son of David, was celebrated. His work reflects a period marked by the loss of statehood, the struggle to preserve national identity, social contradictions and changes, and the pursuit of national and cultural self-determination.
Raphiel Eristavi made a significant contribution to the development of 19th-century Georgian science, culture, and public thought. He was an intellectual with a wide range of interests. His work extended beyond public service to encompass nearly all major fields, including scientific (archaeology, ethnography, history, literature, lexicology, folklore studies, terminology, mathematics, natural sciences), cultural and artistic (theater, playwriting, museology), educational, social (peasant reform), legal (advocacy), financial (Noble Bank, SSLAG1), and journalism (publicism, support for the founding and dissemination of journals and newspapers). R. Eristavi was a founder, member, and active participant in numerous scientific and cultural-educational societies. His civil service and scholarly work were recognized with multiple awards by the empire. It is difficult to find a field in which this distinguished 19th-century figure did not leave his mark. Raphiel, as a public figure and intellectual, through his creative and professional endeavors, became, as Nino Abakelia rightly notes, one of the representatives of the cultural nation and a key figure in shaping the imagined unity of the people.
